According to four individuals familiar with the matter, President-elect Donald Trump intends to appoint Republican Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Noem would be in charge of several important federal agencies as secretary of Homeland Security, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Secret Service, TSA, the Coast Guard, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, NBC News reported.
Two people with direct knowledge reached out to the press and maintained that Trump has already informed Noem that she is his choice for DHS Secretary.
Noem, 52, has expressed ongoing support for the president-elect’s immigration plans despite having little experience with homeland security matters.
Noem highlighted in a number of speeches in January that there was an invasion at the U.S.-Mexico border and that her state’s government was considering sending over razor wire and extra security personnel to Texas to help the state discourage illegal immigration at the southern border.
Echoing Trump and the FBI’s reported stats regarding how violent criminals, including rapists, murderers, and terrorists, are illegally entering the country, Noem has slammed border management by Biden, Harris, and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“He [Biden] is ignoring federal law and allowing people into this country that are incredibly dangerous,” Noem said in an interview in June on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “And just this week I think we had four different people that were attacked or raped or murdered by illegal immigrants that have come in over our open border. And that cannot continue to happen.”
“I believe that Donald Trump, when he comes back to the White House and is in charge of this country, we’re going to have incredible opportunities to show that people in this country will be safer, that we’ll have law and order back in our streets,” she said. “If you look at one of the most violent areas of our country [it] is often Democrat-run cities, sanctuary cities with an open border,” she continued.
Trump had also reportedly been considering Noem as his vice presidential running mate this cycle.
However, the media and politicians on both sides condemned Noem after she revealed in a book published this year that she, rather than giving it up to the pound, a pet adoption center, or even a friend, had shot and killed her 14-month-old puppy simply because it was difficult to train and wasn’t a good hunting dog.
