Following recent legislative changes, the Selective Service System (SSS) has proposed a formal rule to transition draft registration from a manual requirement to an automated process.

In December last year, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2026, which included the section for automatic registration with Selective Service. SSS is the agency that contains the database for those potentially eligible for the draft, including male U.S. citizens and residents.

“This statutory change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,” the website stated.

The agency noted that the change will be implemented by December of this year, saying it will result “in a streamlined registration process and corresponding workforce realignment.” In response to the law, SSS on March 30th submitted the proposed rule, which is pending review.

According to The Washington Times, Congress integrated automatic registration into the NDAA to reduce administrative costs — given the agency’s $30 million annual budget — and to mitigate ongoing legal challenges.

While the Selective Service System mandates that nearly all male U.S. citizens and immigrants aged 18 to 25 register, the agency emphasizes that registration is a data-collection measure and does not trigger automatic military induction.

Additionally, despite mainstream media “speculation” regarding a potential draft under President Donald Trump, due to present tensions with Iran, such a move remains legally impossible without a specific Act of Congress.

The U.S. has not utilized a draft since the Vietnam War ended in 1973.
