TODAY’S PASSAGE
From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:
Our goal was to see whether we could live and work together in close quarters. If it worked, we planned to buy a sailboat and sail around the world. We left the motels in capable hands and set off.
REFLECTION
There’s something deeply beautiful about testing ourselves before making a major commitment. In this passage, we see wisdom in action—the understanding that before embarking on a grand adventure, we need to know if we’re truly ready. How often do we rush into life’s biggest decisions without first asking ourselves the hard questions? Can we work together when space is tight and patience is tested? Can we trust each other when the waters get rough? This couple didn’t just dream about sailing around the world; they had the courage to test whether their relationship could handle the reality of that dream.
What strikes me most is the faith required to leave everything “in capable hands” and set off into the unknown. They had built something—these motels, their livelihood—but they were willing to step away from security to pursue something deeper. This is the kind of trust that transforms ordinary life into sacred journey. It’s not reckless abandonment; it’s faithful preparation. They were listening to something greater than fear, something that whispered of possibility and growth. When we allow love and faith to guide our decisions, we find the courage to test ourselves in ways that ultimately reveal who we’re meant to become.
The close quarters mentioned here aren’t just physical—they’re emotional and spiritual too. When we commit to growing alongside another person, whether in marriage, friendship, or community, we’re choosing to let ourselves be seen fully. There’s nowhere to hide in close quarters. Our patience, our kindness, our selfishness, our grace—everything comes to light. And perhaps that’s exactly the point. Before we can sail around the world together, we need to know if we can navigate the tight spaces of everyday life with love intact. This is where faith is forged, not in the grand gestures, but in the daily choice to work together, to forgive, to try again.
THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…
What journey is calling to you that requires testing first? What relationship, dream, or calling is asking you to step into close quarters—to see if you’re really ready for what comes next? Perhaps today is your invitation to take that first brave step of preparation, trusting that love will guide you through.
