TODAY’S PASSAGE

From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:

Lord Jesus… my life has held very high highs — wonder, beauty, meaning — and very low lows — loss, despair, confusion. And yet, when I look honestly, I have remained mostly at peace. I have always been — for the most part — a happy man. “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance It emerges when joy is allowed to coexist with grief without either being denied.

REFLECTION

There’s something profoundly honest about this prayer that cuts through all the spiritual platitudes we often hear. Life isn’t a straight line toward happiness, nor is it a descent into darkness. It’s both — simultaneously, paradoxically, beautifully. The writer doesn’t claim to have escaped suffering or to have manufactured constant joy through positive thinking. Instead, he’s discovered something far more precious: peace that exists within the tension between the highs and lows, not despite them.

We live in a culture that tells us to “stay positive” and “good vibes only,” as if acknowledging pain somehow betrays our faith or weakens our spirit. But this passage reveals a deeper truth: genuine peace doesn’t require us to deny our grief or suppress our struggles. It invites us to hold space for both the wonder and the loss, the beauty and the confusion. When we stop fighting against the natural rhythm of life — its seasons of abundance and scarcity, its moments of clarity and mystery — we discover that joy and sorrow aren’t enemies. They’re companions on the journey, each one deepening our capacity for the other.

This is where endurance is truly born — not in gritting our teeth through hardship, pretending everything is fine, but in learning to remain open-hearted through it all. When we allow joy to coexist with grief without denying either, we step into a more authentic, resilient kind of happiness. It’s the happiness of a person who has walked through valleys and climbed mountains, who knows that both are part of the path, and who has learned to trust the One who walks beside us through every terrain.

THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…

What if the peace you’re searching for isn’t found by eliminating the hard things, but by learning to hold both joy and sorrow with equal tenderness? Where in your life right now might you need permission to feel both at once — to grieve what’s been lost while still celebrating what remains?
