Newsmax: President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused Canada of allowing unchecked immigration, warning that the country faces worsening problems and pointing to unemployment as evidence.
“Canada is destroying itself by allowing millions and millions of people into the Country, essentially unchecked and unvetted, and who are causing problems that will soon be too big to handle,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “It is a Liberal takeover that will end very badly. Already showing up in their numbers. Big unemployment.”
Trump did not elaborate, but he shared a video of political commentator Victor Davis Hanson.
In it, Hanson described Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trade confrontation with the United States as “left-wing nationalism,” saying Carney is trying to make himself a global counterweight to Trump and the MAGA movement.
Hanson called that strategy a fantasy and warned that a prolonged tariff fight would hurt Canadians.
Hanson also said Canada’s economy is too dependent on immigration and vulnerable to a trade dispute with the United States.
He rejected the idea that Washington should bear what he called Canada’s defense costs while running a trade deficit with its northern neighbor, and characterized Canada’s pursuit of closer ties with the European Union as an expensive, anti-American gamble.
Meanwhile, Statistics Canada reports that the country’s unemployment rate was 6.4% in August, unchanged from July, although employment fell by 42,000 that month.
Trump’s comments also come as Haitians, facing the loss of Temporary Protected Status, may be seeking refuge in Canada, reports The Atlantic.
Canada has a substantial Haitian community, particularly in Montreal, but crossing the border does not automatically give a person access to its asylum system.
Under the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, people arriving from the United States at a land crossing are generally ineligible to make a refugee claim in Canada and can be returned to the United States.
Exceptions include certain people with qualifying family members in Canada, unaccompanied minors, and holders of Canadian immigration documents.
