President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Monday that calls for the creation of an “Iron Dome” missile defense shield for the United States, CNN reported on Monday, citing a document the network said it obtained.
“The threat of attack by ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles remains a catastrophic threat facing the United States,” Bloomberg News reported the order says.
Trump has previously pledged to create such a system — similar to Israel’s missile defense system, which was developed in coordination with the U.S. and uses the same name — as part of moves to boost U.S. military security.
A U.S. system would have to be more complext than the Israeli version, Bloomberg News reports.
Raytheon Co., which produces Iron Dome jointly with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, says the Israeli system can take out weapons launched from a range of 4 to 7 kilometers, according to Bloomberg. A U.S system would have to cover a much larger area than Israel.
