Members of the British parliament have rejected the Brexit deal proposed by Prime Minister Theresa May. In a 432-to-202-vote Tuesday, the members of parliament (MP’s) rejected the proposed agreement with the European Union.
Experts say the U.K. could be facing a ‘hard Brexit’ and a snap election as a result of the vote.
Top conservative MP’s said May’s deal would keep Britain in the EU’s Customs Union and alienate Northern Ireland from the rest of the U.K. They also said these conditions threaten the U.K.’s economic future and territorial integrity, and are therefore unacceptable.
“I don’t believe it delivers Brexit and you set it out very clearly, some of the issues that there are — the divorce payment, the issue with the backstop in relation to Northern Ireland and its relationship with Great Britain, and of course in the backstop we remain the Customs Union potentially indefinitely, so, it’s not a good deal, it’s not delivering Brexit,” stated Jacob Rees-Mogg, MP of Northeast Somerset.
In response to the vote, Prime Minister May said the parliament will have a chance to debate another no-confidence motion. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn tabled a no-confidence vote after that, which is slated for Wednesday.
