Physical events like this make me realize how fragile life can be. In the middle of that storm, I felt help arrive — help I asked for and was ready to accept. How many people come this close to witnessing nature respond like that? You accepted help when it was offered and acted without fear or hesitation. In that moment, the means to preserve the vessel and your lives was made known to you. The storm resumed because the work required of you had been completed. After some time living aboard Billows Rage, I slipped back into old habits and let my drinking get out of control again. The Crow’s Nest pub was only a ten-minute walk from our slip, and I took advantage of that convenience more than I should have. One evening, as I stumbled home, she stood in my path holding an iron in her hand — not to strike me, but to make her point unmistakably clear.
REFLECTION
This passage captures something so profoundly human it takes my breath away. Here we see someone who experienced divine intervention in a literal storm—who felt help arrive, accepted it without hesitation, and witnessed a miracle. Yet shortly after, old patterns returned. The drinking resumed. The destructive habits crept back in. If you’ve ever beaten yourself up for returning to behaviors you thought you’d overcome, this passage is for you. It reminds us that accepting help once doesn’t mean we’ll never struggle again. Growth isn’t linear, and grace doesn’t run out.
What strikes me most is the contrast between two kinds of storms. In the physical tempest, help was recognized and accepted immediately. But in the quieter storm of addiction and old habits, it took something different—a loved one standing firm, holding an iron not as a weapon but as a wake-up call. Sometimes divine help arrives through nature’s pause. Sometimes it arrives through someone who loves us enough to block our destructive path. Both are grace. Both are interventions. The question is always the same: Will we accept the help being offered?
We all have our “Crow’s Nest pub”—that thing conveniently close, easily accessible, that pulls us away from our better selves. Maybe it’s not alcohol. Maybe it’s a toxic relationship, endless scrolling, workaholism, or negative self-talk. The distance is short, the temptation strong, and before we know it, we’re stumbling again. But here’s the beautiful truth in this passage: help keeps showing up. In storms and in still moments. In miraculous interventions and in loved ones holding their ground. We are never abandoned, even when we abandon ourselves.
