TODAY’S PASSAGE
From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:
Emily and I had many long conversations about where we should go next. We ultimately decided on Arizona. On the day we were moving out of the Kent Apartments – part of the motel property – we were busy loading our new Volvo for the drive to Arizona. Justin was playing inside, and amid the excitement and distraction of moving, our attention slipped for just a moment. Emily was inside finishing last-minute check; I was in the car making sure it was ready. When I looked up, I saw Justin on the second-floor balcony, smiling and waving at me. In that instant, he squeezed between the vertical railing posts, lost his balance, and fell headfirst toward the cement walkway below.
REFLECTION
There are moments in life that divide time into “before” and “after.” Michael Canfield captures one of those heart-stopping instants with raw honesty—a moment when everything seems under control, when you’re making plans and checking boxes, and then suddenly the world tilts on its axis. We’ve all been there in some form. Maybe not watching a child fall from a balcony, but experiencing that sickening drop in our stomach when we realize something precious is slipping beyond our grasp. These are the moments that strip away our illusion of control and remind us how fragile, how beautifully fragile, life truly is.
What strikes me most about this passage is the ordinariness that preceded the crisis. They were doing what so many of us do every day—juggling responsibilities, making plans, trying to keep all the plates spinning. Emily was inside checking details; Michael was preparing the car; Justin was simply being a child, innocent and curious. There’s no villain in this story, no negligence, just the reality that life happens in the spaces between our careful preparations. How often do we carry guilt for those split seconds when our attention divides? How often do we replay the “if onlys” and “I should haves” that haunt us after something goes wrong?
Yet within this terrifying moment lies an invitation to deeper faith. When we reach the end of our ability to control outcomes, when our strength proves insufficient and our vigilance fails, we discover whether we truly believe in a love greater than our fear. This passage doesn’t end here in the book, and neither do our stories end in our moments of crisis. The voice of Jesus speaks loudest not in our perfectly orchestrated plans, but in the chaos, the falls, the instants when all we can do is trust that we are held by something stronger than cement, more enduring than our mistakes, more powerful than gravity itself.
THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…
This passage reminds me that my worth isn’t measured by my ability to prevent every disaster or control every outcome. It invites me to release the burden of perfection and trust that even in the moments when my attention slips, when life moves faster than my ability to manage it, I am not alone—and neither are those I love.
