TODAY’S PASSAGE

From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:

We called the doctor and let him know. He replied casually, “Hold your horses. I’m having dinner. I’ll be there in an hour or two.”

REFLECTION

We’ve all been there, haven’t we? That moment when something feels desperately important to us, yet the person we’re counting on seems completely unmoved by our urgency. In this brief exchange, we feel the sting of being dismissed, of having our crisis minimized by someone who should care. The doctor’s casual response—”Hold your horses”—lands like a slap when you’re in the middle of an emergency. It’s a profound reminder of how differently we all experience time and priority, and how painful it feels when our needs are made to wait for someone else’s convenience.

But here’s where faith asks us to dig deeper. How many times have we been on the other side of this equation? How often have we been the ones too comfortable, too busy with our own “dinner” to respond to someone else’s pain? This passage isn’t just about feeling dismissed—it’s a mirror held up to our own hearts. Jesus never said “hold your horses” to those who cried out to Him. He stopped. He turned. He saw people in their moment of need. Love doesn’t ask desperation to wait while it finishes a meal.

Yet even in moments when others fail us, when help doesn’t come as quickly as we need it, we learn something sacred about dependence on God. Sometimes the doctor is late. Sometimes people let us down. Sometimes we’re left holding our fear alone for “an hour or two” that feels like an eternity. And in that space, we discover whether our faith is built on human reliability or divine presence. God doesn’t put us on hold. His line is never busy. His compassion never says “later.”

THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…

Today, ask yourself: Is there someone waiting for me to show up while I finish my own “dinner”? And when I’m the one waiting, can I trust that God is already present, even when human help delays? Love responds—it doesn’t postpone.
