TODAY’S PASSAGE

From “Voice Of Jesus 2” by Michael Canfield:

Somehow, I reached it. Using only my uninjured leg, I pedaled home while the injured one hung uselessly. From there, I was taken to the doctor. The pain of the treatment was worse than the fall itself. My father held my hand as the doctor worked, and afterward my leg was placed in a cast from ankle to hip for six months.

REFLECTION

There’s something profoundly honest in this passage that speaks to the reality of healing we don’t often acknowledge: sometimes getting better hurts more than getting hurt. We fall, we break, we stumble through life’s accidents—and somehow, we make it home. We pedal on one leg when two won’t work. We do what we must to survive. But then comes the treatment, the setting of bones, the necessary pain that precedes restoration. And in that moment, we discover that healing isn’t always gentle.

What strikes me most powerfully here isn’t just the pain—it’s the presence of the father. He doesn’t take away the hurt. He doesn’t stop the doctor from doing what must be done. But he holds his child’s hand through it all. This is love in its truest form: not the removal of all difficulty, but the steady presence that says, “You don’t have to face this alone.” How often do we feel the Father’s hand holding ours through our own painful treatments? Through the therapy sessions, the difficult conversations, the slow recovery from wounds we wish had never happened? He is there, even when the healing hurts.

Six months in a cast. Six months of limitation and dependence. Six months of waiting for wholeness. Healing takes time—far more time than we want to give it. We live in a world that promises instant solutions, but real restoration follows a different timeline. The passage doesn’t tell us whether the leg healed perfectly, but it shows us something more important: we can endure what seems unendurable when we’re not alone, when love holds us steady, when we trust the process even through the pain.

THIS SPEAKS TO ME BECAUSE…

Perhaps you’re in your own painful treatment right now—where doing the right thing, the healing thing, hurts more than staying broken ever did. Maybe you need to remember that the Father’s hand is holding yours through it all, and that the cast won’t be forever. What wound in your life is calling for the courage to seek healing, even knowing the treatment might hurt?
