“Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports,” the airline said in a statement that appears as a banner on the company’s website. “We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we’ll work with our customers to get them to their destinations.”
The Federal Aviation Administration, the federal entity in charge of air traffic and regulation of U.S. skies, issued a ground stop—an order to remain at the airport—for United planes earlier on Wednesday.
One of the four largest commercial airline companies in the United States, United Airlines carries out roughly 5,000 flights a day to and from airports on six continents.
