President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, CEO and Chair of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and the widow of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Board of Visitors.
The move, confirmed on Tuesday, means that Mrs. Kirk, 37, will assume the advisory seat previously held by her late husband, following his assassination in September last year.
The appointment serves as a formal succession to the role held by Charlie, who was fatally shot while hosting a campus event at Utah Valley University. He had been appointed to the board by President Trump in early 2025 as part of a broader effort to reshape the academy’s oversight.
Representative August Pfluger (R-Texas), a United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) graduate and current Chair of the Board of Visitors, later praised the decision, noting he had personally recommended Erika for the position months ago.
“Erika is the right person to fill Charlie’s place on the Board and continue his work of inspiring the next generation of service members,” Pfluger stated. “I look forward to working alongside her to carry on Charlie’s legacy.”
Kirk joins a board that includes several high-profile political figures, such as Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), and Ted Budd (R-N.C.).
As one of 15 members on the Board of Visitors, she will reportedly provide independent advice and recommendations to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who leads the Pentagon, as well as Congress.
Under 10 U.S.C. § 9455, the board is mandated to inquire into several key areas of the Academy.
Morale & Discipline
Assessing the internal culture and well-being of the Cadet Wing.
Kirk will inquire into the social climate and general welfare of the over 4,000 cadets. This involves evaluating the effectiveness of leadership training and the overall health of the Academy’s environment.
The Board has recently focused on reviewing disciplinary procedures to ensure transparency and due process. Additionally, the board monitors the impact of executive orders, such as those related to limiting diversity and inclusion (DEI) programming within the Academy.
Curriculum & Instruction
Reviewing academic standards and training methods.
This area involves evaluating the quality of education and the professional military training provided to cadets. Kirk and the Board are tasked with ensuring that the instruction prepares cadets to lead as officers in both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Space Force.
Recent recommendations include a faculty composition audit to determine the ideal balance between military and civilian instructors.
Fiscal Affairs
Overseeing the institution’s budget and physical equipment.
While the Board does not directly control the budget, it reviews financial management and infrastructure needs to make funding recommendations to Congress.
Current Priorities – Infrastructure: Overseeing the completion of the Academy’s chapel restoration and advocating for new facilities, such as a dedicated “home” for the Space Force on-site.
Funding: Working with the House and Senate Armed Services Committees to secure robust funding in the FY 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
Academic Methods
Ensuring the academy remains competitive with top-tier universities.
This role ensures that the Academy’s pedagogical approach keeps pace with modern warfare and academic excellence. The Board recently advocated for an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Center of Excellence to ensure the Academy leads in drone research and tactics, similar to programs at West Point and the Naval Academy.
They have also pushed for “Multi-Domain Operations” education, integrating air, space, and cyber effects into the academic curriculum.
Turning Point USA
The board appointment is the second major role Erika has assumed following her husband’s tragic assassination. Shortly after Charlie’s passing, she was unanimously elected by the TPUSA board to serve as CEO and chairwoman, fulfilling a succession plan that Charlie had reportedly discussed with leadership.
In her first major public move following the appointment, Kirk is scheduled to appear alongside Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-Ark.) on Wednesday in Little Rock. The duo is expected to announce a major expansion of TPUSA chapters within Arkansas high schools and colleges.
While supporters view the appointment as a fitting tribute to Charlie’s longtime influence in the conservative political sphere, other critics have pointed to Erika’s lack of a military background. Activist Zach Costello and others on social media have questioned the qualifications of political appointees to advise on specialized military standards.
Nonetheless, despite the scrutiny, the White House has remained firm. Spokeswoman Olivia Wales described Kirk as a “fearless advocate” who will ensure the Air Force remains “the most elite airpower force in the history of the world.”
