GOP Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Scott Colom are set to face off against each other in the Mississippi Senate race in November.

On Tuesday, both candidates secured victories in their respective primaries. Hyde-Smith, who is seeking her second full term, enters the general election as the favorite in the heavily Republican Magnolia State. Colom, a district attorney from eastern Mississippi, is making his first bid for higher office.

While Hyde-Smith has the advantage of incumbency and strong party support, Colom hopes to build momentum with his local experience and campaign messaging aimed at voters seeking change.

The two candidates have a history, dating to when the lawmaker vetoed Colom’s nomination to serve as a district court judge in Mississippi during the Biden administration, citing concerns over his voting record—particularly his opposition to legislation protecting female athletes.

“Senator Hyde-Smith is proud of opposing judicial nominations for extreme leftists who support a radical transgender agenda,” Nathan Calvert, spokesperson for the Hyde-Smith campaign, told Fox News Digital. “She opposes allowing men to participate in women’s sports and believes we need judges who will take the same stance.”

“Senator Hyde-Smith believes we need to cut government spending, fight inflation (driven by excessive government spending), and reduce (not increase) our soaring national debt, and she’ll continue voting to do that,” he continued.

Additionally, in the past, Hyde-Smith has pointed-out some of the donors that have helped fund Colom’s campaign.

“The significant support his campaign received from George Soros also weighs heavily against his nomination, in my view,” she stated. “I simply cannot support his nomination to serve on the federal bench in Mississippi for a lifetime.”

On his website, Colom presents himself as a “Putting Mississippi First” candidate, reflecting his campaign slogan. The site criticizes Hyde-Smith, claiming she no longer “works for us,” and accuses her of voting against Mississippi jobs and investments to serve her donors’ interests.

No Democrats has been victorious in a U.S. Senate race in Mississippi since 1982.
