President Donald Trump has announced that he’s delaying his trip to China amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The president provided an update on his travel plans while speaking to reporters on Tuesday, revealing the trip will now take place in five to six weeks.

Trump was originally scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing at the end of the month.

While Trump had previously hinted at a possible delay, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday that the administration was not postponing the meeting to pressure China into helping defend the Strait of Hormuz.

“If the meetings are delayed, it wouldn’t be delayed because the president demanded that China police the Strait of Hormuz… [There is] absolutely not a brewing conflict between our respective nations,” Bessent stated.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said that President Xi was “fine “with the rescheduling.

“They were fine with it. I look forward to seeing President Xi,” Trump said. “He looks forward to seeing me, I think, but I do look forward to seeing him. We have a good relationship with China. China actually is, and has become economically for us very good, very good, as you know, it’s much different than it was in the past, and we have a very good working relationship with China.”

The meeting will mark the first time a U.S. president has traveled to China since Trump met with Xi in 2017.
