President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged the Senate to follow the House’s lead and deliver “one big beautiful” budget bill.
House GOP leaders last week announced that a budget resolution had advanced out of the Budget Committee.
Senate Republicans plan to vote this week on a budget blueprint, that addresses border, energy, and defense spending while leaving changes to the tax code for a separate bill later, Politico reported.
After hailing a “unified, and unbeatable” GOP team in Congress, Trump made it clear he prefers what Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House members are pitching.
“The House and Senate are doing a SPECTACULAR job of working together as one unified, and unbeatable, TEAM, however, unlike the [South Carolina Sen.] Lindsey Graham version of the very important Legislation currently being discussed, the House Resolution implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it! We need both Chambers to pass the House Budget to ‘kickstart’ the Reconciliation process, and move all of our priorities to the concept of, ‘ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL.’ It will, without question, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump posted Wednesday morning on Truth Social.
Less than a half hour after the president’s post appeared, Johnson shared it on X and wrote: “.@realDonaldTrump is right! House Republicans are working to deliver President Trump’s FULL agenda – not just a small part of it. Let’s get it done, @HouseGOP!”
On Tuesday night, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said House Republicans needed to increase spending in their budget proposal to accommodate Trump’s sweeping tax-cut agenda.
Thune was asked whether the House budget resolution could accommodate Trump’s tax priorities, which include extending tax cuts from his first term and the elimination of federal taxes on tips and overtime work.
“The House Budget resolution doesn’t allow for that but that’ll have to be changed,” Thune said, Politico reported.
Graham, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, has stressed the need for funding the administration’s border and national security needs as Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, implements the president’s mass deportation of aliens, especially those with criminal histories.
